INTRODUCING WORK BY MARLIES HOEVERS
Marlies Hoevers is a Dutch artist working in concrete, plaster and found objects. Her concrete wall pieces display an abstract and minimal aesthetic utilizing the natural and raw beauty of material and object.
"In my art, I use found materials and objects that have been discarded because they were believed to have lost their beauty or practical use. My challenge as a visual artist is to reveal the hidden beauty of scavenged materials and objects by subjecting them to a dramatic metamorphosis. I try to capture their inherent soul and give them a new purpose: one of being art. the medium I choose for my assemblages is concrete. The imperishable appearance of this material stands in stark contrast to the transient character and nature of the discarded objects. By using concrete as a relentless fixated medium, the old materials are placed into a new context and converted into ART-FOSSILS, fixated in concrete for eternity and beyond.
Marlies graduated from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, in the Netherlands. She currently works from her studio in Santa Cruz, California.
